Primo Levi agrees to participate in the anthology Auschwitz. Zeugnisse und Berichte and proposes the chapter L’ultimo (The Last One) from Se questo è un uomo (If This Is a Man). He tells Langbein that a German translation already exists (and that he considers it a very good one): the recently completed translation by Heinz Riedt.

il va sans dire que je vous donne bien volontiers mon approbation pour la publication d’un chapitre de mon livre Se questo è un uomo. J’ai parlé ce matin même avec l’éditeur Einaudi, qui également a déclaré son consentement.
Je n’ai aucune hésitation quant au choix du chapitre: le plus approprié, selon moi, serait l’avant-dernier, dont le titre italien est «L’ultimo». Je le préfère parce que c’est le seul où l’on parle pas seulement de souffrance, mais aussi de résistance. Par ailleurs, il n’est pas trop long (7 pages environ).
Le livre est déjà traduit en allemand, et doit paraitre dans quelques mois chez la S. Fischer Verlag de Frankfurt a.M.: comme les droits sur la traduction allemande lui appartiennent, il est nécéssaire que vous vous addressiez à lui pour l’autorisation de réproduction. Il n’aura sans doute aucune difficulté à vous transmettre la traduction de ce chapitre en manuscript; je l’ai vue, et elle me parait très bonne.[1] Si possible, j’aimerais bien aussi voir imprimée dans votre ouvrage la poésie qui sert d’introduction, que vous pourrez également obtenir de Fischer.

senz’altro Le do molto volentieri il consenso per la pubblicazione di un capitolo del mio libro Se questo è un uomo. Ho parlato questa mattina stessa con l’editore Einaudi, che si è detto anche lui d’accordo.
Sulla scelta del capitolo non ho nessun dubbio: il più adatto, a mio avviso, sarebbe il penultimo, che in italiano s’intitola «L’ultimo». Lo preferisco perché è l’unico dove non si parla solo di sofferenza, ma anche di resistenza. E poi non è nemmeno troppo lungo (circa7 pagine).
Il libro è già tradotto in tedesco e deve uscire fra qualche mese per la S. Fischer Verlag di Francoforte sul Meno: siccome i diritti sulla traduzione tedesca appartengono a loro,è a loro che dovrà rivolgersi per l’autorizzazione a riprodurre il testo. Non avranno certamente nessun problema a inviarLe il manoscritto con la traduzione del capitolo; io l’ho vista e mi è sembrata ottima.[1] Se possibile, vorrei che nel libro fosse stampata anche la poesia d’apertura, che potrà chiedere sempre a Fischer.

I have no hesitation as to choosing a chapter: the most appropriate, I think, would be the next to last, whose Italian title is “The Last One”. I prefer it because it is the only one that discusses not only suffering, but also resistance. Also, it’s not too long (about 7 pages).
The book has already been translated into German, and is to come out in a few months with S. Fischer Verlag in Frankfurt a.M.: since the rights to the German translation belong to him, you will have to speak to him for permission to reprint it. He will surely have no difficulty sending you the manuscript of the translation of this chapter; I’ve seen it, and I think it is very good.[1] If possible, I would also like to see printed in your book the poetry that serves as an introduction, which you can obtain from Fischer as well.
In case you encounter any difficulties, let me know, and I will see about helping you. In the meantime, I send you my wishes for the new year and for the success of your undertaking, and I warmly shake your hand
